About OPAL
In
2012 when the dump was announced, two young DJ’s hauled
their audio equipment into Colombo Hall and invited the
public to talk. At the end of that discussion, a core
group said they would found an association to stop the
dump. Partner organisations quickly came to the fore
too. Thus the OPAL Alliance was formed.
The founding board worked to
establish a constitution, incorporate OPAL, research and
inform the public and local politicians, all the while
fighting the dump. That fight continues with an active
hands-on board, many members and volunteers lending a
hand at weekly sign-wavings, assisting at
ReuseapaloozAHA!, writing letters to the Minister of the
Environment, filling the house at public meetings and
keeping up to date on how to defeat the dump.
