According to Elizabeth
Willnot's Book, "When Any Time Was Train Time", the first train
arrived in Ingersoll in Dec 15, 1853 with regular passenger service
started on January 27, 1854. The Great Western Railway built the first
station, a plain building, that was replaced by the present structure.
Ingersoll saw three railways come to town in the early years. Along
with the Great Western, the Credit Valley Railway and the Tillsonburg,
Lake & Pacific all eventually made it to Ingersoll.
The Woodstock, Thames Valley
and Ingersoll Electric Railway also operated a tramway between
Ingersoll and Woodstock from 1901 until 1925.
Ingersoll is now serviced by
CN, Ontario Southland and VIA so is still a busy railway town.
The station is starting to
show serious structural defects and will be demolished in the near
future. The photos below were taken in Aug 2003 and it is much worse
now. |
